For the Love of Type
PRINT DESIGN • TYPOGRAPHY • PAGE LAYOUT
Book chapter researching a typeface, its designer, and typographic qualities, compiled into a collaborative book.
I chose the typeface Ulalong designed by Jad Maza, a designer dedicated to open-source typeface design and representing Filipino culture.
Initial Layouts
Ulalong is the time of year that cotton-spinning and Hablon weaving takes place in the Philippines. Alongside the calligraphic style of the typeface, it was important to visually represent the threads and practice of weaving.
Final Design
Ulalong also includes a Baybayin counterpart, a pre-colonial alphabet and script of the Philippines. In an effort to provide for its use, something that is being encouraged more and more in the country today, Maza includes many Baybayin versions of his typefaces.
Try it yourself!
Ulalong is available to purchase, and can be paired with many other open-source typefaces by the designer.
